Here is a little backstory of how this mug came to life:
Back in early 2005 my paintings were starting to appear in galleries in Hawaii. It was an exciting time for me and was a good motivator to start a secondary career as a published artist along with my career in themed entertainment. My work started in Waikiki in the "Tabora Galleries" and "Diamond Head Gallery" on Kalakaua Ave in Waikiki and on Front Street in Lahaina, Maui.
One of the series I came up with was the "Drink Machine" series. Many of you purchased prints when in Hawaii after the originals sold. Out of those there was one called, "The Blue Hawaii Shimylator". It was a fun sort of contraption perched on the beach at night under a full moon with Diamond Head in the background. It was supposed to be making a "Blue Hawaii" cocktail as its finished product. I recall I painted this entire piece on my balcony in Waikiki.
Part of the painting featured an "Elvis" inspired "Tiki" where the finished cocktail emerged ready to be enjoyed. I got a lot of interest and requests to do more based on that Tiki. This led to a series of famous Hawaiian associated legends. I called the series, "The Hawaiian Idols" series. The most popular of the series was "Da King" based on the Tiki in the "Blue Hawaii Shimylator"!
Well, 20 years later, I decided to take my original mug concept interpretation of this design into a small run of mugs completely sculpted, directed and manufactured by me here in our "THOR" ceramics studio in Pasadena. With the help of my team, they have supported me fully and their capabilities have made this a reality. I could not be more thrilled with the result!
With warmest aloha's, THOR and Kat
